Tryouts for the 2018-2019 Season
The first day of tryouts is Wednesday, October 17, 2018 - Redhawk GC
What do I need to do to try out for the boys' golf team?
    1)  Pick up a 2018-2019 athletic clearance packet.  (Available in the athletic office or download from the athletics homepage)
    2)  Once it is completed (with a sports physical), return it to Mrs. Gorbacz (athletic office secretary)
    3) She will give you a stamped clearance sheet.  Take that sheet to Coach Boyatt in room 357 and he will add you to the tee sheet.
Why are tryouts held in Oct. for a spring sport?
1)  Daylight savings ends in early November.  After that date, it is impossible to play nine holes after school.
2)  Many of the players that make the team will be able to be placed in a special 6th period PE class that will allow them to go to the golf course after 5th period.
Since the new semester begins in January, the tryouts need to be held before then so schedules can be adjusted.
What if I am playing another sport and can't try out?
The Wolfpack does everything we can to support multi-sport athletes.  If you are involved in a fall sport and will not be able to attend our October tryouts, please
stop by and introduce yourself to Coach Boyatt in room 357.  We will provide an additional opportunity for you to try out at a later date.
We would still like for you and your parents to attend the meeting on the evening of October 29th.  Hawk's Landing (Redhawk)  -- 6 PM
How good do I need to be to make the team?
Boys' golf is a sport that typically only has a varsity program.  (There are very few JV programs in a 50 mile radius.)
Six players play in a varsity match, thus many teams carry around 8-10 players.  Last year, the Wolfpack carried 16 players, enough to run 2 teams and keep 4 alternates beyond that.
Carrying enough for an additional team means we have to travel great distances to find JV matches.  We don't mind doing this, as carrying an extra 8-10 players on a team
gets more players connected to school and gives players the opportunity to improve in the wonderful game of golf.
Last season we finished the season with 15 players, and 4 of those players graduated in June.  That leaves us with 11 players, if they all return to the team.
This year we are going to keep 16 players.  That gives us a varsity roster with 6 players, a jv roster with 6 players, and a foursome to play behind matches.
October tryouts will decide what 16 players would be smartest for the program to keep on the roster.
We want to keep as many players as we can that could possibly contribute to our varsity team's success in the future.
That means that a freshman/sophomore that shoots 98 might take priority over a junior/senior that shoots 92.
I have no idea how many newcomers are trying out for the team this year.  Over the course of the past few months, I have heard of a few players that might be try out:
Caden Flores, Ian Bruchhauser, Sean Curry, David Knight, Ken Watanasiripong, Ryan Osorio, Dylan Voegele, & Ethan Hathorn
It is difficult to predict a number of what it is going to take to make the team.  (Players improve in off-season, more players try out, players don't perform as well under pressure, etc.)
My rough estimate would be that if you are breaking 85 you might make varsity, if you are breaking 95 you might make JV, and if you are under 105 you might be one of the four alternates.
I don't think I am being overly optimistic, as I know many of the returners have been working hard in the off-season.

Complete October Tryout Schedule
Wednesday, October 17 -- Newcomers Only -- This round will determine who will be invited to play with the returners on Wednesday.
October 22 (Monday), October 24 (Wed), October 29 (Mon) --  All players will compete for the 16 spots on the team.
A player will be cut when it becomes clear that he is not yet ready to be in the top 16.
Parent Meeting Will Follow the Final Round on October 29 (6:00 in Hawk's Landing (Redhawk))
PURPOSE OF OCTOBER TRYOUTS
New Players:
    1)  Obviously, to see what newcomers will make our rosters this season
    2)  To see if any freshmen can be considered "varsity athletes" (projected to play in varsity matches), which will enable them to get a 6th period release for second semester
Returning Players:
1)  I like to get everyone on the squad back together for a few days.  Not only to see how our games have improved since last season,
but to get to know the new players on the team.  Hopefully you can start playing with them in the months before the season begins.
2)  It is meaningful to give players a sense of where they stand on the team.  It will motivate some borderline players to work harder before February.
3)  We need to get everyone playing  Redhawk.  Most of you play elsewhere in the off-season.  Our league championship will depend on how well we play at home.
4) I want to post as many rounds as possible for every player on the team.  Last year we averaged 34 rounds per player.
Season averages start from day one.  Looking at "Overall Averages" for the school year is often the deciding factor when it comes to important lineup decisions.
5)  Team pictures are taken in March.  The top half of the team is in a varsity picture, the bottom half of the team is in a junior varsity picture.
I like to have at least fifteen rounds posted before we make that determination for our team photo.
6)  We need to finalize a roster.  We will once again be putting on a fundraising tournament before the season starts in February.
We only want you to help us raise money if it is certain you will be on the team.
Overall averages start day one.  Be ready to play!
How much does it cost to be a part of the team?
The state of California says that a player will be provided a high school athletic experience, regardless of his ability to pay.
The district funds a stipend for a varsity golf coach, transportation to league matches, and a portion of our postseason expenses.
A player is entitled to that experience without having to pay a penny.
Other than that core experience, the program feels that it is important to do other optional things to keep our program strong.
If we work together to raise money, we will be able to do things that go above and beyond a league schedule.  Optional expenses include things such as:
          - Quality uniforms (Two shirts, pants, shorts, hat, pullover)
          - A personalized golf bag for players to keep
          - Transportation to play in quality non-league matches
          - Entry fees in invitational tournaments
          - End of the year banquet
          - Team meals when we travel
In 2018, we were able to meet most of these expenses thanks to the fundraiser efforts of our parents.
We will have a meeting with all of the families at the conclusion of October tryouts to discuss ways that we can make this happen.
If we raise the money by the start of the season, we will plan on making the experience as good, or even better, than our 2018 season.
If we don't raise the money, we can cut back our expenses.  (Fewer tournaments, less gear, etc.)
